How to develop reading habit

 


 

Reading books not only help a person to gather knowledge, but also improve memory, concentration, imagination ability and skills. But building a reading habit seems difficult to a lot of people due to lack of time or consistency. I also have been there before but by following some strategies I have built a reading habit. I have shared them below. 

Choosing right books

When we try to start reading, the first problem we face is to select a book. So first of all we should make a list of books by book reviews from websites like https://www.goodreads.com/https://bookish.netgalley.com/ .Make a list by including books you find interesting or related to something you wanted to learn. Then pick up the first book from your list and start reading. 


Setting a goal 

Lack of consistency is the main reason for not having a reading habit. So setting up a reading goal can help you to stay focused. First of all set a goal to read certain number of books in a week and fix certain number of pages to read in a day.  You can use apps like GoodReads.com to make a reading challenge. It helps to keep track of your reading. Also making a schedule to read in a particular time of the day can help. Fix some comfortable times such as afternoon, before sleeping or whenever you feel comfortable to read.

Keeping concentration

Finding a good place to read which is quite, comfortable and without any distractions is very important .Try to stay away from TV, Smart phones or anything that distracts you . Set a time goal for each time you sit for reading and keep reading for that particular time without any break. Besides you should know when to stop reading a book. Because it’s not mandatory to finish every book you read .Just quit reading and switch to another book if you don’t find it interesting enough even after reading 30% of the book. 


Reading anywhere

Try to carry a book everywhere you go. Replace unnecessary habits and other entertainment items with reading .Read in your free time or commuting time instead of scrolling facebook or instagram,watching TV, video games etc .Also use PDf or Audio book to read anywhere anytime.

Get a reading partner

Last but not the least, find a reading partner with whom you can discuss what you read or you can share books with each other. You can make competition to read more books with each other which will motivate you to read more. Recommend each other new type of books.

These above mentioned tips can help a person to build a reading habit that has helped me . Besides enjoying reading and understanding the benefit of reading books can motivate a person to read reagularly.
